I remember how fun building my first website from scratch was. Sometime around 1996 I bought a book on html & css, probably an O'reilly, skimmed thru it, read, typed, read, typed... save(d)... double-clicked the html file, and watched the magic load in Netscape Navigator! Wow, have things changed!
After building my first site and putting it online. (Wow, I just remembered how expensive it was!) I proved myself to a few employers and got to work in the first wave of the Dot Com, spending my days building and maintaining static sites until the day I met Vignette Story Server (VSS), an early Content Management System (CMS). The company I was working for at the time decided to convert the business site over to VSS so I started learn Tcl/Tk, Java, and Oracle/SQL, the languages and database VSS was built with. Those early days were exciting and I'm happy to say I was there! But, I was also there when it burst in the early 2000's. Ouch!
I've continued to learn different languages, databases, and CMS's, helping various people and organizations establish a web presence. I particurlarly like helping NGO's whose mission is to help people at home and around the World. More recently, as in the past 15+ years, I've been working primarily with Drupal, Django, and of course, WordPress.
When I'm not tapping away at one of my laptops (aging Lenovo X220 or T480 both running Linux Mint), I'm usually out riding my bicycle, or listening to music, or reading / listening to a book on Hoopla, or trying to do something "Artsy", or listening to the radio, especially Old Time Radio (OTR).
Building this site brought back a lot of good memories... giving this aging human a lot of joy! San Francisco is where I call home.
